I have no experience with bass horns, but I suppose that any sound source into a given size room can excite its modes, hence a big bass horn or a line array of boxed woofers can be equally annoying in that regard. So if the idea of using horns is to ...

Yes, the crossover looks fancy :) More than that it does the job. The vacuum caps are only for the tweeter and the upper-mid beryllium. Still they are bridged with micas as they wont do much alone. Adding vacuum caps smoothens the transitions and sou...

Paul,After looking at some photos of Stock Altec horns, though they appear reasonably stout, I can believe they would still resonate when excited by sound pressure alone, as they are still on the thin side if left as bare metal.See them here : http:/...

I am really enjoying myself here at Romys site. I like the idea of someone documenting their efforts in a very (self) critical way.I think that anyone solving issues in a methodical way uses similar techniques. They all involve stripping the problem ...

Yes, the bottom response is about right. There is a thing about the bottom response, I might be a bit in unchartered territory as I do not know how properly calibrated your measurement devise and many other conditions that might affect the measur...

The visual element of the brief shoyld be able to be achieved by doing thing nicely, thought out and with good materials.I am aware of the no parallel walls and this may well be utilised into the design. A simple stud wall, set inside the perimeter w...
Too late now for points, but just the other day I tried to imagine your plan. and I was pretty close.Actually, it is a bit like what I have going now; 15" Eminence bass guitarr woofers in a sealed 3 cu ft cabinet,Oris 150 with...

No, the speakers like Altec 19 have time miss-aligned drivers. The majority of 3-4 way horn speakers with oken/jensn as a bass that you might see in internet also very seldom time-aligned but it is excusable as the DIY-audio people are mostly Morons ...

I tend to think that we are not copying Romy, but more that he has generated a school of thought on audio and yes horns speakers also.I too have a system following some of the Macondo Axioms, but have used all diferent drivers. As with other drivers, ...
Whilst as Romy points out, the room might well be on the small side, it has a very high ceiling (say 4.5 m) that in my mind always presents fabulous opportunities.
I have a second opinion about the size of the room. My in...
Interesting take on the Altec 820. No way can this be done for 20k. Looks like dipole bass with some attenuation for mid frequencies.
Markus, the price of this thing might be anything they want. They can set if $100K and ...
You have often questioned the nature of my relationship with Fane. There is none but as this project comes close to a final conclusion, I would say there have been moments when Fane have been less than helpful. They had never men...

Thanks for your advice Romy and Stefano.I have used RTA with condenser mic in my past systems but I admit I am no professional at it. But I am not clueless with it either.. In my previous setup when I was playing with open baffle designed speakers, ...

In his latest YouTube,Romy mentioned using my prepro to time align my drivers.I use the Trinnov Altitude 16 prepro which has a total of 20 channels. 16 of the channels have balanced analog outputs and the othe four Channels use the rca and optical sp...

Well, I think that you should first read about Romys Macondo speakers. There are several threads with his thoughts that should help you get away from the DIY approach that did not give you the results that you expected. You have experienced first han...

Romy, lips are a very interesting part of the resonant musical instrument.I did an experiment many years ago by gluing a headphone driver to a mouthpiece and feeding it a sine wave, sawtooth and square wave. With the sawtooth and square wave the sound...

Well, Yoshi, at least you're on your way to getting your speakers more of a piece.I have for some time warned people against a mix-n-match approach with the DEBZs, based on my early experiments with them, and it is true enough to say, I think, that&n...

Well written article, I think, and he is good enough to share right away that he is a "vintage" guy, and an AN guy, which helps me contextualize his observations, even though he does not reveal the nature of the $$$$$$ "ultimate horn speakers" (...

Paul S:DSET is a very high power solution to a question that I only have a very primitive understanding of. It is not right for me at this time.I would prefer if the model etc. of my speakers not be involved in this discussion. I know I am committing...

Haralanov, I've spun this thread off the "Speakers for a Powerful SET" thread, as you suggested. I took a couple of pictures, but I can't figure out how to upload them, just yet. I'm also not sure what you could see from the outside, anyway. As for th...
An observation that might only be of superficial interest to the thread: I don't think the speakers use Klangfilm woofers. The pictures are a bit grainy, but the dustcaps look far too big for the original Bionor woofers. I would ...

The direction of lansing was the main factor of speakers not W.E. Just look at the phase plug on the W.E HF drivers and look at the phase plug on the lansing Hf drivers this is were it all went down hill. Your mid and Hf drivers from lansing took the...

Thanks for the wise, simple instructions, Roman, also useful to others, I believe... that's what I actually do since I - 'twas ONLY 15 months ago... - became conscious of the limits of my tuning-by-ear and got my IVIE IE-30 with Class A measurement m...

Yes, this Model 19's have brand new foam surround and brand new refinish grills. I know what kind rebound distortions those kind of horns create without surround foam but the miserly that they crate is much more than this. I do not know what kind cr...

I do not know, I do not see a lot of sense on bookshelf horn construction. The core of topology resets to bookshelf configuration. A horn but it very basic nature is bandpass devise. As soon you introduce a horn then you automatically truncate th...
Romy, Any thoughts yet as to Injection Channel location/integration in new room? Selfish question, I recently got a pair of reds, and have been trying to think of how to place them/type of enclosure to build, without distur...
The Western Electric L-9 in Munich was/is an infinite baffle design. The 754B woofers are in a sealed enclosure with a front horn. There is no possibility of cancellation between front wave and back wave of speaker, so I wou...
Yeah, but plywood is cheap and the result is audibly noticeable. Baffle extensions were recommended for all of the Altec VOT cabinets too. Make a big improvement for cheap if you have the space.
As the frequency dec...
Is not about the cost of
plywood bit the placement cost if the speakers have this type wings.

I guy that I know invited me a few way back to listen a new speaker that he brought from a Plaishner , the Switzerland manufacturer. The company make own flat loudspeakers and now they looks like parley to making speakers. This is very innovative des...
